It’s finally here: My profile of Mark Warner, the wunderkind Virginia governor and likely 2008 presidential candidate. I’ve been working on this almost my entire time at Washingtonian so far but we decided it made the most sense to run it as Warner leaves office and heads off into the great unknown.
The best part of my job at Washingtonian is the cool things that I randomly end up doing. For this article, I found myself seated next to Warner on his state police helicopter zipping across Virginia during a beautiful fall day in September. The state looked beautiful from the air and, I have to say, a helicopter is a pretty good way to travel.
Not having done good advance work on his schedule for the day, I wore a suit and tie to interview him and spend the day on the road with him. He was in a polo shirt and jeans. The press conference of the day? In a hayfield. Here I am traipsing through the dusty hayfield, with my fancy shoes and suit. I could not have looked more like the “suit from Washington.” Can you say awkward?
